Biology Class

In this first semester of a year long laboratory class, we will investigate biological principles, develop laboratory skills and refine report writing. Whenever possible, we will perform hands on activities and investigate authentic applications in the areas of  evolution, ecology and physiology.  We will explore lines of inquiry by designing and performing experiments, recording observations, organizing data, and interpreting results using mathematical analysis. We will discuss selections of current literature and reflect on relevant issues that involve biology.

We will review and practice note taking and study skills necessary for success in high school and college courses. We will practice critical evaluation of information resources, such as the Internet and news media, as well as peer reviewed journals. We will exercise our technical skills by creating spreadsheets, tables and graphs using software like Microsoft Excel and Word. We will also have the opportunity to maintain and access files and links on our high school and class web pages and to develop and present oral reports using PowerPoint software.

Along with reading, homework may consist of text questions or problems to answer, current event assignments, as well as reciting, reflecting and reviewing of notes taken during class. Labs performed in class will need to be written up as homework according to provided guidelines. This class may be taken for college prep credit. A minimum number of nine formal lab reports must be completed (earning >60 %) for college prep credit to be awarded.
