Early Reading

  • Use a multi-sensory reading program like Sonday or Sing, Spell, Read and Write.
  • Oak Meadow’s early reading curriculum is great for creative thinking and relating-inspiring types. It is based on stories.
  • Play lots of games with sounds and rhyming words.
  • Use Reading Rods Program for a more hands on and visual approach. They also come with early decodable books.
  • Talking Letters is a highly visual program for learning the alphabet.
  • Do a lot of read aloud and discussing books.

Literary Response/Reading Skills

  • Have student act out their favorite part from a book or create a new ending.
  • Have students respond in reading response journals where they can explain their own thinking.
  • Allow students to choose creative book projects and assessments for responding. See the Alternative Assessments for Literature binder for use with a wide variety of novels.
  • Use a novel unit approach to study literature.
  • Dress up as a character from a book and role-play that character.
  • Create oral reports on tape of what is being studied.

Writing

  • Teach visualization and mapping skills. I would suggest the Link Up to Writing Program  from The Learning Success Institute.
  • Use lots of graphic organizers to help take notes, organize information and plan writing.
  • Check out the 4 Square Writing Method from Rainbow Resources.
  • Check out the software from Don Johnston. They have software like Co Writer to help organize ideas and help with spelling and vocabulary words.
  • Dictate information or stories as a way of demonstrating knowledge.
  • Use a visually stimulating approach such as Step Up to Writing.

Spelling

  • Use picture clues and stories to memorize spelling words that don’t follow spelling rules.
  • Use lots of word study activities to study prefixes, suffixes and root words. One resource is Month by Month Phonics for Upper Grades available at ETA Cuisenaire.
  • Also try Words Their Way and Teaching Phonics and Word Study in Upper Grades.
  • Check out the software from Don Johnston. They have software like Co Writer to help organize ideas and help with spelling and vocabulary words.
  • Try manipulatives for spelling like reading rods and Making Big Words.
  • Have the student create his own dictionary for vocabulary or spelling words he has learned.
  • Use tools like an electronic dictionary or spell checker when he is editing his written work. This will help in memorizing the patterns of word families and sight words.
  • Teach student how to edit their written work for spelling mistakes. You can use this as an opportunity to teach about word parts.
